This unit will allow the students to explore aspects of their own communities and further compare it to the community of Africville. Located within Nova Scotia, Africville was a community founded by two black men by the name of William Brown and William Arnold (Welldon, 2009, p.3). Throughout the unit, the students will learn about the specific features of their communities and how they meet particular needs they have. The community of Africville was treated unfairly by the people of Halifax in a number of ways, but particularly in the lack of resources they were given. Work through this unit with your students to broaden their understanding of the dynamics of oppression within Canada in relation to the survival of a community.
