Lesson 1: What is a community?
Specific Expectations:
1.2 Identify distinguishing physical features of their community (e.g., storekeeper, hair salon, etc...) Social Studies
Lesson Description:
- (5 Minutes) Have the students sit on the carpet. Pose the question, "What is a community?" Tell them they will be participating in a 'Think Pair Share' activity. Think about what they believe a community is, find an elbow partner, and share both of their thoughts.
- (15 Mintues) Bring the group back together and have them share their ideas with the class. Make a list on chart paper of their ideas.
- (15 Mintues) Use the Nelson Literacy Kit (for Grade 1): My World. Use the photo concept cards. Pass them around the circle so the students can see different things that happen in their community, as well as different communities around Canada.
- (5 Minutes) Conslidation: Have an open discussion about new learning or confirmed ideas.
