Lesson 6: Places in Africville

Lesson Description:
- (5 Minutes) Display the website (http://www.africville.ca/places/) on the SmartBoard. Inform the students that there were some very important places within the community of Africville. The four places that we are going to focus on are the Church, School, Tibby's Pond and Kildare Field. Do we have some of these places in our own community? (Refer to previous chart created in Lesson 1 about the features of their own community).
- (15 Minutes) Take them to the places by using the website. Show them the pictures and read the information about each place to them. Show them the google earth link they have showing the real church still standing in Africville today.
- (15 Minutes) Gather the students on the carpet and introduce them to non-fiction books using "The Children of Africville" by Christine Welldon. Pages 16-23 discuss the same places talked about on the website.
- (5 Minutes) Consolidate: What does the Church, School, Tibby's Pond and Kildares Field offer the community of Africville? (Participate in a Think, Pair, Share followed by a group discussion about their findings).
