Lesson 12: Racial Prejudice

Lesson Description:
-(15 Minutes) Read the book: "The Skin You Live In" by: Michael Tyler. Discuss how everyone within the book and in the classroom have different skin colour, but we are all the same i.e., like similar activities, foods, and have certain needs etc...
Ask the students if they know what the words race and prejudice mean? Refer to the book: "The Children of Africville" by: Christine Welldone pg. 27. "Racial prejudice is an attitude someone has if they do not like the colour of your skin. People do not care if you are a good person; they only judge you by your skin colour (Welldone, 2009, p. 27)."
Discuss the notion that in Africville, the people did not have heat in their houses, toilets, fire departments, police man etc...
They were treated differently in Halifax because of their skin colour. The people of Africville were forced to relocate their homes and live in Halifax. Refer to pages 37-56 of "The Children of Africville"
-(15 Minutes) Perform the 4 corners activity with the students. Place 4 signs around the room entitled "Yes" "No" "Maybe" "I Don't Know"
Ask the students different questions about Africville.
Questions: Is prejudice a good word? Were people of Africvile treated nicely by Canadians? Were people of Africville white? Did they have schools? Did they have toilets in their houses?
-(10 Minutes) Consolidate: Oral discussion about how they feel about the concept of racial prejudice.
